Art in the New Economy

Sandy and I just got back from the New York Gift Fair. We get a big bang out of this show because you can buy anything from the super balls you find in a gum machines to Italian hand blown chandeliers. A large chunk of the show has work by crafts people from all over the country.  Some are one-person operations others are larger studios. It will come as no surprise that buyer traffic attendance at the show was much lighter than years past. People were being very careful with their hard earned money. That being said there was action and a lot of wonderful new pieces from both established artists and a host of young talent. The bottom line is everyone trying to find away to make the whole thing work. It’s a great time to buy something handmade because prices are being held in check by the new new economy. I like to tell customers who come into Orbit Gallery that the nice thing about art is it will always have value both in physical and metaphysical. You are also helping to support the artists in this country and unlike beer,  it’s still there the next day!
